Platinum and blue is a common combination used in the watch industry. Also the new platinum Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph comes with a blue color matching the platinum. With a rather stunning metallic blue dial and deep midnight blue rubber strap Audemars Piguet aims for a fashionable modern look, being sporty and classy.r part so nonchalantly. 20 years ago you’d never see a rubber strap with a tourbillon, and no tourbillon watch would have been this sporty. Have we come that far?
But let us have a closer look to this master piece you will notice fine watch making. Perlage polishing is liberally used on the in-house made movement and the 3Hz balance wheel looks like something from Audemars Piguet’s most elegant stock. Elegance, with a sporty armor, though. Audemars Piguet uses a modern looking black-colored anodized aluminum bridge over the tourbillon, and more black aluminum bridges in other parts of the movement, such as on the rear, and to hold the mainspring barrels in place.
The in-house made Audemars Piguet caliber 2912 manually wound movement has a power reserve of 237 hours. A nice long time, unfortunately this new time piece doesn’t offer a power reserve indicator. You’ll have to manage looking to the mainspring barrels. They are visible through the skeletonized sections of the dial. Looking to the looks the Royal Oak offshore is based on the original Royal oak from 1972. In many ways is is a retro design. Nevertheless the 2912 movement and the new design changes like have casing metal and the hands, crown, chronograph pushers make sure this new watch has it’s own character and contemporary look.
The finishing and decor of the caliber 2912 movement shows the high-end quality of this timepiece. With its 44m diameter it is a wide watch to wear. Certainly having the Audemars Piquet design. Even more the watch feels incredibly solid given the mostly platinum case construction. The case further uses some ceramic, as it is used for the bezel, crown and chronograph pushers. With a water resistant to 100 meters and a sandwiched AR-coated sapphire crystal this watch is without a doubt the new high-end master piece.
Although it is not a limited edition the watch will be a rather rare watch. It mixes both the sporty world of the Royal Oak Offshore with the more prestigious association people have with tourbillon-equipped watches, all in a style Audemars Piguet has more or less perfected by now.
